Working Process

The successful replacement of Nokia equipment with Ericsson hardware for AT&T in Michigan followed a carefully structured process to ensure safety, efficiency, and uninterrupted service. Here’s how our team executed the project:

  1. Project Planning & Coordination
Detailed site surveys and technical evaluations were conducted to assess existing infrastructure and define the upgrade scope. Coordination with AT&T ensured alignment on timelines and network requirements.

  2. Logistics & Equipment Preparation
Ericsson equipment was staged and configured off-site to streamline on-site installation. All necessary tools and safety gear were prepared for top-tower work.

  3. Decommissioning of Nokia Equipment
Legacy equipment was safely powered down and removed, with environmental and regulatory compliance in mind.

  4. Installation of Ericsson Equipment
Our top-tower crews installed new antennas, radios, and support equipment, maintaining rigorous safety standards throughout.

  5. System Integration & Testing
Ericsson hardware was integrated into the existing network infrastructure. Rigorous testing ensured seamless performance, with minimal downtime or service impact.

  6. Final QA & Handover
Quality assurance checks were completed, followed by a formal handover to AT&T’s network operations team.

AT&T is actively engaged in SWAP (Switch, Upgrade, and Placement) construction projects as part of its network modernization efforts. These projects involve replacing older equipment, such as Nokia radios, with newer technology, like Ericsson equipment, to improve 5G capabilities and network performanceAT&T is also focusing on Open RAN deployments, which will involve multiple vendors and a more open and interoperable network infrastructure.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
  • SWAP Projects:
AT&T is heavily involved in swapping out older network equipment, specifically removing Nokia radios and replacing them with Ericsson or other vendors’ equipment.

  • Open RAN:
AT&T is leading the way in commercial scale Open RAN deployment, partnering with Ericsson and other vendors.

  • Focus on 5G:
These projects are aimed at enhancing 5G capabilities and improving overall network performance.

  • Third-Party Contractors:
AT&T relies on third-party companies, known as “turf vendors,” to handle the physical work of these projects.

  • Regional Management:
MasTec Network Solutions is overseeing the East Coast, while Pearce Services manages the West Coast.

  • Cost Reduction:
Shifting network management to MasTec and Pearce Services is part of AT&T’s strategy to cut operating costs.
